Beware costly retail tech gimmicks, Duologi
Yesterday, RTIH reported on the release of Tech London Advocates’ Retail Tech 50 list, which showcases the most interesting and exciting retail technology companies in London.
Not everyone is impressed, however. Gary Little, co-CEO at consumer finance specialist Duologi, argues that many of the solutions on display would be expensive and time-consuming for retailers to implement. Brands must not lose sight of the basics before trying gimmicky added extras, he says.
“Technology has been hailed as the saviour of the ‘dying’ High Street and – while this is true in many ways – retailers need to get the basics right before implementing any costly gimmicks such as in-store AR tech or drone deliveries,” Little comments.
“For example, integrating simple online platforms, such as a consumer finance or store credit offering - which can increase sales by up to 40% - is being ignored by even major UK brands. As the Amazon juggernaut continues apace, and with House of Fraser just the latest in a long line of retail casualties, businesses need to focus on simple digital tactics that will pay dividends, or risk losing out.”
