Poundland sees funny side of Neil Ferguson scandal

Regular visitors to this site will know that we’re mahoosive fans of Poundland’s social media efforts.

And the retailer didn’t disappoint this week as it poked fun at Neil Ferguson, Director of the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College London.

Ferguson resigned from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies on Tuesday evening after the Daily Telegraph revealed he had broken coronavirus lockdown rules at least twice to meet a lover.

“Because maybe you've been framed...#BunkerBanter,” Poundland tweeted, alongside this pic of Ferguson and his lady friend. Top banter, we say.

Taking on the chunterers

Poundland stores have continued to operate amid the coronavirus outbreak. Some people have not been happy about this and they’ve been kicking off on social media.

Big mistake. The retailer took to Twitter to address its critics, or ‘chunterers,’ as it calls them.

Pointing out that it sells food and other essentials like household cleaners, toiletries and pet food, it said: “There are one or two noisy souls who have been countering away all week. They’re a bit steamed up that we’re open and think Britain should now be at Waitrose. Well, respectfully, we’d like to ask them to pipe down a little.”

Poundland also asked the chunterers to stop tweeting the likes of Boris Johnson and Piers Morgan. “We really don’t want others to judge you,” it quipped.
