The five most important retail tech news stories of the week

It’s Friday, it’s almost the weekend, so let’s kick back and reflect on another eventful week for the retail systems space. Here's your briefing on the most important stories from the past few days.

1. Tesco presents ovation worthy financial results but online challenges remain

Tesco has issued its 2020/21 preliminary results, with the grocery giant notching up £825 million in pre-tax profits, down from £1,028 million in the previous year. 

2. XPO Logistics lands Asos fulfilment centre deals

XPO Logistics has snagged a contract to manage a new fulfilment centre in Lichfield Staffordshire for online fashion retailer Asos. 

The 437,000 square foot DC at Fradley Park is expected to commence operations in August, creating about 2,000 new jobs over the next three years.

3. Amazon opens third London Amazon Fresh store, in White City

Amazon has opened an Amazon Fresh location in White City, London.

It’s the third such convenience store to feature Just Walk Out Shopping tech in the UK, which was pioneered at the Amazon Go offering in the States.

4. Walmart invests in self-driving cars company Cruise

Walmart has backed all electric autonomous vehicles venture Cruise.

It has joined a previously announced funding round, bringing the total haul to $2.75 billion.

The retailer says that this will aid its work toward developing a last mile delivery ecosystem that’s fast, low cost and scalable.

5. Kroger launches first Ocado powered customer fulfilment centre

Kroger has introduced its first customer fulfilment centre, powered by the Ocado Smart Platform.

This is the result of an exclusive Kroger and Ocado partnership, signed in 2018. 

The CFC is located in Monroe, OH, a city north of Cincinnati.
