Laurence Fox slams Sainsbury's over Black History Month tweet
English actor Laurence Fox is boycotting Sainsbury's over the supermarket’s promotion of "racial segregation and discrimination".
Yesterday, we reported that Sainsbury’s had divided opinion by expressing its support for Black History Month and stating that people should shop elsewhere if they weren’t down with an inclusive retailer.
This led Fox, who in recent times has reinvented himself as an anti-woke provocateur, to tell his 239,000 Twitter followers.
Dear @sainsburys

I won’t be shopping in your supermarket ever again whilst you promote racial segregation and discrimination.
I sincerely hope others join me. RT#BoycottSainsburys

When asked if he shopped with Sainsbury’s on a regular basis, he said.
It’s my nearest supermarket. So yes. I am not cancelling them. They just won’t be getting my custom until they address their regressive and segregationist policies. They also hint at an ethnic pay gap in their literature. What do you think about that? https://t.co/PsI4cEiAy6

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s commented: “We proudly represent and serve our diverse society and we are proud to be celebrating Black History Month with our colleagues and customers.”
RTIH’s take on the Sainsbury’s tweet: There is a fine line between taking a noble stand on an important issue and virtue signalling for likes and retweets.
And Sainsbury’s just crossed that line, IOHO.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a major supermarket backing Black History Month. However, it’s a slippery slope when you start telling people to shop elsewhere if they’re not down with your POV, particularly when you operate in the cut throat world of grocery retailing.
Time for a social media and PR rethink, perhaps?
