Nestlé taps IBM blockchain for traceability of Zoégas coffee
Nestlé is expanding its IBM Food Trust blockchain technology platform to the Zoégas coffee brand.
Zoégas fans can now trace select coffee editions back to different origins in Brazil, Rwanda and Colombia.
Consumers will also be able to access information including time and location of harvest, roasting period, transaction certificate for the specific shipments, farmers, via scanning a QR code on the packaging.
The initiative became possible after Nestlé partnered with the Rainforest Alliance, according to a press release.
Nestlé started using blockchain technology in 2017 when it joined the IBM Food Trust as a founding member, alongside the likes of Dole Food Co., Driscoll’s and Golden State Foods.
And the Switzerland-headquartered food retail giant has also been involved in a joint pilot with WWF-Australia and BCG Digital Ventures, designed to trace milk from producers in New Zealand to Nestlé’s factories.
