Amazon Go to make UK debut this week with London store opening
The first UK Amazon Go store is set to be unveiled this week in Ealing, West London.
According to a report by the Mail on Sunday, workers have been preparing the site in recent weeks.
Yesterday, the Amazon Go facade was covered in an effort to keep the project under wraps for as long as possible.
Morrisons, which serves as the British arm of the Amazon Fresh delivery service, has reportedly teamed up with Amazon for the launch.
Plans are afoot for at least another 30 Amazon Go outlets in Britain.
The US e-commerce giant declined to comment on the London launch. Morrisons did not respond when contacted.
RTIH Innovation Awards
The RTIH Innovation Awards will return later this year, following a barnstorming 2020 where winners included Asda, AO, Co-op, Bitreel, MishiPay and Mercaux.
Over the next few months, we will be flagging up early front runners for the 2021 event. And we’re kicking things off with the Most Innovative Retailer (Rest of World) category.
Amazon took home the gold last year, impressing our judging panel as it adapted strongly to the challenges posed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its existing infrastructure meant it was able to cope with the spike in demand and continue to grow its business.
Moreover, the cleverly timed Prime Day allowed it to own the beginning of the peak discounting period, contributing to the creation of a 10-week ‘Mega-Peak’.
2021
It’s only February and already Amazon has purchased 11 Boeing 767-300 aircraft as it looks to speed up delivery times for US customers.
It has also expanded its Amazon One palm reading biometric identification system to three more Amazon Go stores in Seattle.
And stepped up its Rivian electric delivery vans trial.
Earlier this month, Amazon Founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, announced that he would transition to the role of Executive Chair in the company’s Q3.
Amazon Web Services Chief Andy Jassy will become CEO at that time.
Bezos goes out on a high note, with Amazon reporting record revenues for its core Christmas quarter, topping $100 billion for the first time as the coronavirus pandemic powered a surge in online shopping.
How will Jassy fare in the hot seat and will he steer Amazon to a second consecutive RTIH Innovation Awards win?
Stay tuned for further details. And bank on the likes of Alibaba Group, Walmart, Tesco and Carrefour giving Amazon a run for its money.
