Finnish local commerce specialist Wolt says 23% of all deliveries are now made in ‘clean’ vehicles
Wolt, a Finland-based technology and local commerce company, has shared that 23% of all its worldwide deliveries were made using either electric vehicles or bicycles between July 2024 and July 2025.
The company says this marks “significant progress” towards more sustainable last mile delivery and an 8% increase year-on-year in ‘clean’ deliveries.
Wolt operates in more than 30 markets around the world and says more than 80% of deliveries in Austria and 66% in Germany were ‘clean’ in the past year. In Hungary, Croatia and Poland, it says over 30% of deliveries were ‘clean’.
“Clean deliveries are not just essential for us to meet our climate commitments - they directly contribute to our mission to make cities better,” comments Jamie Saab, Wolt’s Global Head of Sustainability. “This is about reducing air pollution, noise, and congestion - but also about making electric vehicles accessible and affordable for anyone doing deliveries.
“Too many couriers want to switch but face barriers like high upfront costs and financing challenges. We’re working to break down those barriers so that choosing a zero-emission vehicle becomes the standard rather than the exception. And beyond sustainability, switching to e-bikes and e-mopeds just makes business sense: in many of our markets, two-wheelers are the most efficient way to serve merchants and customers in busy city centres.”
Wolt is also supporting couriers with its Better Cities Fund, a €2.25 million grant fund to allow couriers to switch to specially designed e-bikes and electric mopeds which are not only better for the environment but also more efficient, allowing riders to increase their earnings.
Earlier this year, Wolt announced the expansion of its partnership with electronics retailer MediaMarkt. The pair are now partnering in two key markets - Hungary and Austria - to deliver small electronic devices and accessories directly to customers’ doorsteps in as little as 35 to 90 minutes.
2025 RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS
Green retail will be a key focus area at the 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards.
The awards. which are now open for entries, celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.
Our 2024 hall of fame entrants were revealed during an event which took place at RIBA’s 66 Portland Place HQ in Central London on 21st November, and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by comedian Lucy Porter.
In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “The event is now into its sixth year and what a journey it has been. The awards started life as an online only affair during the Covid outbreak, before launching as a small scale in real life event and growing year on year to the point where we’re now selling out this fine, historic venue.”
He added: “Congratulations to all of our finalists. Many submissions did not make it through to the final stage, and getting to this point is no mean feat. Checkout-free stores, automated supply chains, immersive experiences, on-demand delivery, next generation loyalty offerings, inclusive retail, green technology. We’ve got all the cool stuff covered this evening.”
“But just importantly we’ve got lots of great examples of companies taking innovative tech and making it usable in everyday operations - resulting in more efficiency and profitability in all areas.”
Congratulations to our 2024 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended November's gathering.
