Morrisons makes change to 10% coronavirus discount for teachers

Morrisons is to continue on with its 10% discount for teachers and school staff amid the coronavirus outbreak.

This was first introduced last year as Brits grappled with a series of Covid restrictions imposed by the government.

There’s a slight catch, however.

From April, people will be asked to join the Teachers Club and then use their Morrisons More card or app at the till to claim the discount. This will replace the need to show their teacher or school staff photo ID.

Brighter times ahead

Morrisons today revealed a 62% plunge in pre-tax profits for the year to 31st January despite a surge in sales during the pandemic.

David Potts, Morrisons Chief Executive, flagged up £290 million of Covid related costs, including covering for worker absence and paying store staff a bonus, coupled with the decision to return £230 million of business rates relief.

Andrew Higginson, Chair, commented: “This has been a year where our resilience has been severely tested and I could not be more proud of the way the whole business has met that test.”

“As we look forward to brighter times ahead, Morrisons is developing into a stronger, better business with deeper and closer relationships with our customers and the communities we serve.”

Meanwhile, the online and wholesale businesses, which benefit from a tie-up with Amazon, were profitable, and there was a big increase in capacity for Morrisons.com.

Morrisons is also supplying the new Amazon Fresh grocery store which opened in London last week.
