Grocery delivery startup Gorillas raises $290m following London launch

German delivery startup Gorillas, which promises grocery orders within 10 minutes, has raised $290 million in Series B funding, taking its valuation past the $1 billion mark.

Earlier this month, the venture launched in London, following expansion in Germany and the Netherlands.

It is now delivering to Angel, Shoreditch and the surrounding areas.

Gorillas, which raised $44 million in Series A funding during December, says it is “on a mission to redefine convenience retail”.

It delivers from its own distribution hubs at “retail prices”.

The company was founded by Kağan Sümer and Jörg Kattner in May 2020 and started its service in Berlin.

GoPuff

Another major player in the on-demand delivery space is US-based GoPuff.

It recently raised $1.15 billion in new funding, more than doubling its valuation to $8.9 billion.

The deal brought 2021 investment in US grocery and convenience goods startups to more than $1.7 billion, according to PitchBook data.

GoPuff will use the funds to expand its presence in the US as well as internationally, and also focus on diversifying its product lines.
