Sainsbury's Group CIO Phil Jordan discusses retirement plans

Phil Jordan has announced plans to step down as Sainsbury's Group CIO and retire in March 2023.

In a LinkedIn post, he said: “Proud of my 35+ years in tech and grateful to have worked with brilliant people and for great businesses! #sainsburys #telefonica #vodafone #axa #boc #clarks.”

“Delighted that I will continue to contribute as a NED and Board Chair alongside enjoying all those things I have wanted to do but haven't had time.”

Jordan joined Sainsbury’s in 2017 from Telefonica where he was Global CIO and previously European CIO.

Prior to that, he spent a number of years in senior roles at Vodafone, including as CIO UK & Ireland.

At that time, the then CEO at Sainsbury’s, Mike Coupe, said: “Phil’s appointment recognises the strategic importance of digital and information technology as an enabler for our future success and sets us up to deliver excellence in this area across the business.”

Jordan added: “The role of the Digital & Technology function in the retail sector has never been greater as the pace of change accelerates.”

“Technology and digital services extend to every part of Sainsbury’s and, following its recent expansion, this is a very exciting time to join the Group.”

Sainsbury’s did not respond to our request for comment about Jordan’s replacement.

Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree recently appointed Bobby Aflatooni as Chief Information Officer.

He replaced Andy Paisley, who departed Dollar Tree alongside three other C-suite executives, following an activist investor led revamp of the retailer’s board.

“Bobby is a proven leader with a strong track record of delivering results and leading multiple system transformations,” said Mike Witynski, President and CEO.

“The technology investments we will make over the next several years will be critical to our success as we enable our people, simplify work streams and accelerate our growth.”

Aflatooni most recently served as Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer at The Howard Hughes Corporation, responsible for leading all information technology strategies and operations across the company’s portfolio.

Prior to that, he held leadership positions at another large value retailer, Dollar General, as Vice President of IT Operations, Architecture, Merchandising from March 2011 until April 2018, and as Senior Director IT Infrastructure and Architecture from January 2009 to March 2011.

His career includes development and oversight of IT priorities for Yum! Brands, CapitalOne Auto Finance, LayerOne, Silverleaf Resorts and CapitalOne Services.

Aflatooni said: “Our team will be driven to focus on systems infrastructure enhancements to support the company’s growth by providing better support to store associates, merchandising and marketing teams, and our supply chain to deliver improved shopper experience.”

“Having worked with, and supported, a number of leaders at Dollar Tree in previous roles will enable us to hit the ground running.”
