GM - Finance, Digital and Technology Matt Edmonds announces departure from Coles Group

Matt Edmonds has left Coles Group, where he spent just over ten years, most recently serving as GM - Finance, Digital and Technology.

His CV also includes stints at Tesco and Fresh & Easy.

In a LinkedIn post, he said: “After a remarkable decade, my journey at Coles is coming to a close. It has been an honour to work with so many talented and caring people who always put customers and community first, even when things were tough.”

“As I step aside, I want to thank everyone who has been part of the journey - their commitment has been invaluable. During my time, there were many moments I’m proud of. With the help of an outstanding digital team, we were able to scale e-commerce through the volatility and challenges of Covid, turning it into a steady source of growth.”

He added: “Forming the Ocado partnership was a major milestone, leading to two top tier automated fulfillment centres in Melbourne and Sydney. We also made digital and technology spending more transparent and meaningful, and reduced real costs so Coles could keep investing in value for customers.”

“I’m truly grateful to the teams who put in the work, the partners who helped me, and the leaders who supported decisions as things changed. Working together as a team is what made everything possible.”

“Great businesses solve real problems and bring people together. I’ve seen that in action every day at Coles, and I’m proud of what we built and the impact it leaves.”

He concluded: “As for what’s next: opportunities where finance, digital and operations connect. If you’re building something ambitious, I’m always open to meet - whether over coffee, a chat, or a good old whiteboard session. There’s always another challenge, and always great people to tackle it with.”

2025 RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS

Supply chain automation was a key focus area at the 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards.

VoCoVo, Everseen, Sensei, Gander, Iceland, Olio, Trust Retail, East of England Co-op, Lekkerland SE, Poq, Mamas & Papas, Varner, Sitoo, and Zebra Technologies were among our winners this year.

We received a record number of entries and many fantastic examples of the continued resilience and dynamism of the retail space during hugely challenging times.

Our 2025 hall of fame entrants were revealed during a sold out event which took place at The HAC in Central London on 16th October and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by award winning comedian, actress and writer Tiff Stevenson.

In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “This is the awards’ fifth year as a physical event. We started off with just 30 people at the South Place Hotel not far from here, then moved to London Bridge Hotel, then The Barbican, and last year RIBA’s HQ in the West End.”

“But I’m conscious of the fact that, to quote the legend that is Taylor Swift, You’re only as hot as your last hit, baby. So, this year we’ve moved to our biggest venue yet, and also pulled in our largest number of entries to date and broken attendance records.”

He added: “This year’s submissions have without doubt been our best yet. To quote one of the judges: The examples of innovative developments across both traditional and digital retail spaces were truly remarkable.”

Congratulations to our winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Tiff Stevenson, and all those who attended our 2025 gathering.
