Amazon, Sainsbury's and Tesco top Retail Week list of UK's biggest e-commerce retailers
Amazon, Sainsbury’s and Tesco are the UK’s biggest e-commerce retailers according to a forecast of their online sales for FY2022 by Retail Week.
As online retail sales hit their lowest point since January 2021, M&S, Harrods and Nike also feature within the ranking of the UK’s top 30 online retailers, among the brands with the highest predicted online sales for the current financial year.
Retail Week Research Director, Lisa Byfield-Green, says: “Online sales have been on a downward trajectory since May 2021, following the surge seen in the UK during the pandemic and this has impacted the performance of many pureplayers and predominantly online retailers.”
“The combination of the cost-of-living crisis, return of footfall to stores and rising numbers of hybrid shoppers has meant online retailers must work harder than ever to win digital spend.”
“With more shoppers having less money to spend on discretionary retail thanks to the worst inflation rates in 40 years, pureplay and multichannel retailers must now work harder to make every single click count.
“The traditional e-commerce strategies relied on previously are no longer fit for purpose and retailers must rethink engagement and ways to attract and retain shoppers.”
“Fortunately, we’ve found that there are retailers getting this right, through measures like exceptional online customer service, effective supply chain infrastructure, mobile app investment, greater personalisation and a data first approach.”
A secondary ranking by Retail Week also identifies Fenwick, The Co-op and SCS as the UK's top e-commerce retailers by sales growth for FY2021, with their online sales growing by 200%, 185% and 144% respectively during the last financial year, higher than any other retailer in the UK.
Heritage department store Fenwick could also continue to increase its online sales by a further 113% this year.
