RTIH retail tech awards: Payments Innovation shortlist announced

RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS SPONSORED BY

RTIH has unveiled the seventh shortlist for its 2020 Innovation Awards.

Payments Innovation recognises a project/initiative that is both innovative and customer and retailer friendly. Bonus points if it could be considered a first in the market.

Last year, buy now, pay later specialist Klarna emerged triumphant, impressing our judging panel with several big contract wins and the launch of pop-up stores in London and Manchester.

Here are the 2020 runners and riders.

Adyen

Adyen has rolled out Giving, enabling its merchants to accept charitable donations during the online and in-store checkout process. It partnered with the likes of Gap, Delivery Hero and Crocs for the launch.

MishiPay

2020 has been a year of innovation and international expansion for MishiPay, including the launch of its Scan, Pay & Go mobile self-checkout solution in Ireland with BWG Foods.

Decathlon also rolled out MishiPay’s offering across its 81 German stores.

PayPal

PayPal customers will from early 2021 be able to use cryptocurrencies to shop at the 26 million merchants on its network.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s has accelerated the roll-out of its SmartShop solution.

The technology will be deployed at all 770 of its convenience branches in time for Christmas. Sainsbury’s says that sales through SmartShop have exceeded 50% in some stores and 37% of total sales across the retailer in the past quarter.

X5 Retail Group

Russian food retailer, X5 Retail Group, has opened its first cashierless store as part of its Pyaterochka chain.

Located in Moscow, the pilot store, dubbed On the Fly, is pitched at urban dwellers who prefer to make contactless purchases on the go.

Zippin/Azbuka Vkusa

US startup Zippin launched in Europe with what it labelled “the first checkout-free store within a store”.

It partnered on this with Sberbank, Visa and Azbuka Vkusa, a grocery retailer in Russia. The store within a store is located inside one of the latter’s locations in Moscow. Azbuka Vkusa converted one of the aisles for the initiative.

What’s next?

We will now ask our judging panel to cast their votes and provide their feedback.

The winner will be revealed in mid-December.
