Back Market forecasts record 2025 as it launches repair platform in France, Germany and Spain

Back Market, a marketplace for second hand technology devices, is forecasting €3 billion in gross merchandise value for 2025 as it claims to be entering a “new phase of growth”.

The company has also launched a new repair platform, open in France, Germany, and Spain. Customers and non-customers can access smartphone and table repairs on both a one-off and monthly basis.

The platform is supported by Evy and offers a guarantee on all repairs. Customers whose devices cannot be repaired will be given a trade-in voucher.

The new repair service aims to make Back Market the first “one stop shop” for smartphones and tablets.

Refurbished devices now account for 36% of the device market, up from just 4% in 2011. Back Market says inflation is pushing consumers toward more affordable alternatives to brand new items.

“The shift away from fast tech is no longer a niche trend, it’s becoming a cultural norm,” comments Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Co-founder and CEO at Back Market.

“Consumers are choosing durability, repair, and reuse because it makes sense for their wallets and for the planet. Our role is to accelerate that movement and make the sustainable choice the easy choice.”

Back Market says it now has 17 million customers across 17 markets and has seen a 36% increase in new users in the current quarter alone.

France is its largest market, followed by the US, UK and Germany. It says all of these markets have seen double digit growth, while others continue to expand “rapidly”.

It has also shared plans to scale its business-to-business offering. It already works with nearly 6,000 companies in France and 250 in the US but plans to expand across Europe and the US.

2025 RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS

Green retail will be a key focus area at the 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards.

The awards. which are now open for entries, celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.

Our 2024 hall of fame entrants were revealed during an event which took place at RIBA’s 66 Portland Place HQ in Central London on 21st November, and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by comedian Lucy Porter.

In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “The event is now into its sixth year and what a journey it has been. The awards started life as an online only affair during the Covid outbreak, before launching as a small scale in real life event and growing year on year to the point where we’re now selling out this fine, historic venue.”

He added: “Congratulations to all of our finalists. Many submissions did not make it through to the final stage, and getting to this point is no mean feat. Checkout-free stores, automated supply chains, immersive experiences, on-demand delivery, next generation loyalty offerings, inclusive retail, green technology. We’ve got all the cool stuff covered this evening.”

“But just importantly we’ve got lots of great examples of companies taking innovative tech and making it usable in everyday operations - resulting in more efficiency and profitability in all areas.”

Congratulations to our 2024 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended November's gathering.
