Amazon announces The Climate Pledge milestone as big hitters sign up

Amazon and Global Optimism report that more than 100 companies have now signed The Climate Pledge.

Among the 52 new signatories joining today are Alaska Airlines, Colgate-Palmolive, Heineken, PepsiCo, Telefónica, and Visa.

Signatories agree to: Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.

Implement decarbonisation strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.

Neutralise any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of 2050.

“Less than two years ago, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge and called on other companies to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early,” says Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO.

“Today, more than 100 companies with over $1.4 trillion in global annual revenues and more than five million employees have signed the pledge.”

“We are proud to stand with other signatories to use our scale to decarbonise the economy through real business change and innovation.”

“We are delighted to welcome more than 20 new UK-based businesses who are committed to taking urgent action and meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement ten years early,” comments John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager, Amazon.

“These companies add to the collective impact at scale that Climate Pledge signatories create, helping to decarbonise the economy and preserve the earth for future generations.”

“It is a testament to the UK’s climate leadership to have so many British businesses across a broad spectrum of industries making this commitment today, and we look forward to others joining us to accelerate positive change.”
