Argos advert sparks heated debate on social media

Argos has found itself at the centre of a Twitter storm after launching a new advert.

This features an all black family enjoying a range of garden items including a popcorn machine, an outdoor projector screen, comfy seats and a children’s toy car.

Argos tweeted: “With summer spent closer to home this year, our gardens have been hosting relaxed family evenings. Movie lovers, are you good? Or are you good to go?”

“Completely unrepresentative of modern Britain though," one Twitter user responded.

Another ranted: “So @Argos_Online isn’t interested in white folks then. Fine, we’ll use somebody else. See how long @Argos_Online lasts without white customers!!!”

Many others, however, defended the ad, labelling the backlash “disgusting”.

"I'm SCREAMING at these white British people saying they're going to complain to OFCOM about an Argos advert with Black people. what are you gonna say, Doug? "I'm racist and this upsets me"? That's not a valid complaint, love," said @NicoleFroio.

Whilst @docscott31 observed: "I saw Argos was trending and assumed it was going to be about job losses due to Covid but it turns out a bunch of racists got triggered because Argos had the 'nerve' to run an advert with a black family in it. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be British."
