Brits boost Valentine’s Day spend amid coronavirus lockdown

Brits are set to significantly increase their Valentine’s Day spend this year, according to research from Emarsys involving 2,000 people.

In 2020, those in a relationship splashed out an average of £24.39 on 14th February, but this year as the country finds itself under coronavirus lockdown restrictions, they are spending more than £50 on their partners.

Chocolates and flowers top the list of most popular presents, on the list of 40% and 32% of people respectively, while around 15% are going to purchase underwear and loungewear for their partners. For those aged 16–24, that figure stands at 25%.

Payal Hindocha, Retail Analyst at Emarsys, says, “Without the ability to go to a restaurant or otherwise have a date out this Valentine’s Day, couples are turning to more traditional gifts for their partners.”

“Since we’re all locked in our homes at the moment, it’s interesting to note how popular buying underwear for your partner has become this year.”

“We have clients in this area, and they have experience significant growth across the last year, and Valentine’s Day is set to be a profitable day for them this year.”

One such example is Lounge Underwear.

Arron Kooner, Head of Customer Communications, comments: “We’ve seen a huge uptick in sales for loungewear and underwear recently, and we’ve tailored our service to make sure we’re catering for people during the pandemic.”

“For example, we have a gifting page for men and women, and also a fitting experience for those that want to find out their size but can’t go into a shop to find out.”
