Snappy Shopper CTO talks quick commerce market disruption as price hikes and rider pay protests loom large
Quick commerce is here to stay but industry giants like Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat need disrupting, specifically due to their price hikes and poor fleet compensation. That's the view of Lisa Venter, Chief Transformation Officer at UK-based Snappy Group.
Earlier this year, Deliveroo achieved its first ever profit. It earned £1.3 million in the first half of 2024 - a sharp turnaround from the £82.9 million loss it made during the same period last year.
This came as Deliveroo (alongside Uber Eats and Just Eat) branched out from takeaway food to also focus on grocery and retail deliveries.
It also conincided with rider strikes and other protests calling on the rapid delivery industry to improve pay for a group of workers who are often classed as self-employed.
Snappy Group's Snappy Shopper business, meanwhile, announced an expansion of its partnership with One Stop, with an additional 280 stores joining the platform.
Following an initial 250 store launch in October, this brings One Stop’s total to 530 stores on the platform, enabling more communities across the UK to access rapid grocery delivery.
In addition, One Stop is launching Snappy Rewards, an exclusive loyalty programme available at participating stores. This will allow customers to unlock perks based on tiered spending, including free products and discounts on future purchases with Snappy Shopper and One Stop.
Mike Callachan, CEO at Snappy Shopper, said: “We are passionate about supporting local communities and making convenience shopping as rewarding as possible.”
“Expanding our partnership with One Stop and introducing Snappy Rewards is an incredible opportunity to connect with even more shoppers. Together, we’re creating added value for brands, customers, and One Stop by bringing accessible, convenient, and rewarding grocery options to communities across the UK."
In a LinkedIn post, Venter said: "It's 3.5 years on since I started at Snappy Group and I’ve now spent more than half as long in retail tech as I did in travel tech. Skyscanner taught me so much about how to test, measure and learn in online marketplaces and drive AARRR. The lessons live on at Snappy Group."
2024 highlights included being "proud to wear red and blue representing Snappy Shopper and Hungrr. The work we do in this sector is critical to feeding people affordably whilst boosting local business in financially challenging times."
Venter concluded: "Growth of our tech adoption, traction and the quick commerce market is all happening at once. 2025 is ours for the taking with our retail partners using our tech… let’s go!"
Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat did not respond to our request for comment.
2024 RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS
Snappy Shopper was among the winners at the sixth edition of the RTIH Innovation Awards.
The awards, sponsored by Vista Technology Support, Scala, CADS, 3D Cloud, Brightpearl by Sage’s Lightning 50, Business France, and Retail Technology Show 2025, celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.
Our 2024 hall of fame entrants were revealed during an event which took place at RIBA’s 66 Portland Place HQ in Central London on 21st November, and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by comedian Lucy Porter.
In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “The event is now into its sixth year and what a journey it has been. The awards started life as an online only affair during the Covid outbreak, before launching as a small scale in real life event and growing year on year to the point where we’re now selling out this fine, historic venue.”
He added: “Congratulations to all of our finalists. Many submissions did not make it through to the final stage, and getting to this point is no mean feat. Checkout-free stores, automated supply chains, immersive experiences, on-demand delivery, next generation loyalty offerings, inclusive retail, green technology. We’ve got all the cool stuff covered this evening.”
“But just importantly we’ve got lots of great examples of companies taking innovative tech and making it usable in everyday operations - resulting in more efficiency and profitability in all areas.”
Congratulations to our 2024 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended last month’s gathering.
