Tyrrells just owned Twitter and we need no more news today

Tyrrells, a manufacturer of crisps owned by KP Snacks, has produced the perfect response to a tweet by Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The latter took to Twitter yesterday to announce: “I can reassure the manufacturers of artisan crisps that they are in no danger, in fact I am a Walker’s crisps man or Pringles when I’m feeling extravagant.”

Arf…Tyrrells responded: “Our social media team has never been so chuffed to see someone eat Walkers crisps…”

This was a reference to #YorkshireTeaGate. Last Friday, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak posted a pic on Twitter, which showed him making tea for his team. Because politicians are just like you and me, right?

His weapon of choice was Yorkshire Tea, which did not go down well with many people. The company had nothing to do with Sunak’s lame attempt to look like a normal person. Nonetheless, hoards of keyboard warriors took it upon themselves to call for a boycott of ‘Tory supporting’ Yorkshire Tea and fire various insults its way.

“So it's been a rough weekend,” Yorkshire Tea tweeted. “On Friday, the Chancellor shared a photo of our tea. Politicians do that sometimes (Jeremy Corbyn did it in 2017). We weren't asked or involved - and we said so the same day. Lots of people got angry with us all the same.”

The company spent the next three days answering “furious accusations” and boycott calls. “For some, our tea just being drunk by someone they don't like means it's forever tainted, and they've made sure we know it,” it said

“It's been pretty shocking to see the determination some have had to drag us into a political mudfight. But it's been lovely to see others speak up for us - we're so grateful to everyone who's done that in a civil way (and gutted to see some use it as a reason for more nastiness).”

There was also a shout out to the people charged with running brands’ social media accounts. “For anyone about to vent their rage online, even to a company - please remember there's a human on the other end of it, and try to be kind,” Yorkshire Tea concluded.

Amen to that.
