Former Aldi Nord COO and CTO Guido Hoepfner joins REWE digital as Chief Operations Officer

Guido Hoepfner has taken on the role of Chief Operations Officer at REWE digital, REWE Group’s IT unit.

His CV includes stints as COO and CTO at Aldi Nord, Partner at McKinsey & Company, and Director Technical Consulting at SAP.

In a LinkedIn post, REWE digital said: “Guido brings more than 25 years of experience: from IT, strategy and transformation consulting as well as from Handel. With his expertise in digital transformation, strategic IT development and innovation management, he will strengthen REWE digital as Chief Operations Officer and further develop the cooperation with the REWE Group and central functions.”

It added: “He will be responsible for the value stream domain corporate functions and the business transformation department, as well as IT commercial management in the future. Until December, Guido will work side by side with Thomas Friedl (the outgoing COO). Then we will say goodbye to Thomas after more than 34 years in the service of the REWE Group.”

“We would like to thank Thomas for his great commitment. Thanks to his special understanding of the challenges in the food retail sector, he has played a key role in supporting the further development of today's REWE digital over the past decades. Dear Guido, welcome! Let's write a new chapter in REWE digital's success story together.”

Think about the future

In the food retail sector of the future, only those who have mastered digital and technology better than others will be successful - and this also applies to discounters.

That’s the view of Christoph Eltze, Member of the Management Board REWE Group (Chief Digital and Technology Officer).

He says: “Digitisation is changing the food retail sector, and this does not only affect full range retailers. Even though we are leading the way with many projects and trying out new things, especially at REWE, our discounter is also benefiting PENNY Deutschland from our findings.”

Key here is the retailer’s ‘Smarter Work in the Market’ project. As part of this, all market processes, including the perspective of customers, are examined.

REWE Group reports the first results:

Further improved market specific space and assortment planning

Digital communication between colleagues in stores and headquarters and an AI supported knowledge assistant for store teams

Automated queue management

Self check-outs

Integration of the PENNY app for customers and the My PENNY app for employees.

Eltze adds: “We are also making progress in the trend topic of retail media. We are already an industry pioneer with REWE, we are now also starting at PENNY. By the end of the year, we will equip 200 stores with digital steles, and in the future there will be 1,100.”

He concluded: “The biggest result for me personally, however, is that we really think holistically about the digital transformation at PENNY – as we do throughout REWE Group. This is only possible because all colleagues from the store to the headquarters pull together. And I am sure: the best is yet to come!”
