New ReBound data predicts ‘triple wave’ of returns after flurry of bank holidays in the UK

ReBound Returns has shared data suggesting a consistent pattern of increased return volume following Easter, early May bank holiday and the Spring bank holiday.

It analysed data and found a “consistent pattern” of spokes in returns volume in the weeks following the bank holidays around Easter and in May each year. The data shows a “noticable uptick” in returned items arriving in the week after long weekends, with the peak increasing year-on-year.

Increased consumer spending around bank holidays, particularly for events, leads to a natural increase in returns once these occasions have passed. The closure of some retailers and Post Office services can also limit drop-off returns, leading to higher volumes once usual business hours resume.

In 2024, the highest levels of return outside of the November-January peak season occurred one week after the Spring bank holiday and ReBound believes this could continue in 2025.

Retailers are warned to expect surges in returns in the weeks commencing 28th April, 12th May and 2nd June 2025.

With this year’s Easter weekend falling later than in previous years, retailers have had more time to prepare. But ReBound also notes that the shortened timeframe between this break and the next bank holiday could create a more challenging, condensed period.

The news follows reports that £1.5 billion worth of unwanted Christmas gifts were returned at the start of 2025, according to Manhattan Associates.

“Retailers are well aware of peak shopping periods in the calendar, but bank holiday return spikes often catch brands off guard,” says Marko Kiers, Chief Commercial Officer at ReBound. “Each year, we see an increase in returns volume following the seasonal long weekends. With return rates already on the rise, and the 2025 “triple waves” all taking place within just five weeks, the pattern will likely intensify.

“Ensuring a smooth and efficient returns process will be vital in getting items back to stock for faster resale, and for quick refund processing times, so customers’ money is back in their pockets to spend on the next long weekends. The resulting boost to customer satisfaction and brand loyalty will deliver long-term rewards far beyond the spring season.”

2025 RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS

Online returns management will be a key focus area at the 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards.

The awards. which will open for entries in April, celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.

Our 2024 hall of fame entrants were revealed during an event which took place at RIBA’s 66 Portland Place HQ in Central London on 21st November, and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by comedian Lucy Porter.

In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “The event is now into its sixth year and what a journey it has been. The awards started life as an online only affair during the Covid outbreak, before launching as a small scale in real life event and growing year on year to the point where we’re now selling out this fine, historic venue.”

He added: “Congratulations to all of our finalists. Many submissions did not make it through to the final stage, and getting to this point is no mean feat. Checkout-free stores, automated supply chains, immersive experiences, on-demand delivery, next generation loyalty offerings, inclusive retail, green technology. We’ve got all the cool stuff covered this evening.”

“But just importantly we’ve got lots of great examples of companies taking innovative tech and making it usable in everyday operations - resulting in more efficiency and profitability in all areas.”

Congratulations to our 2024 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended November's gathering.
