Pinterest launches Thrift Shop allowing users to buy secondhand items on social media platform
Pinterest is launching Thrift Shop, a new shopping experience that makes vintage and secondhand items available to purchase directly on the platform.
Available from 20th August to 26th September, Thrift Shop is the first experience of its kind on Pinterest. It will partner with vintage and thrift retailers from across the world, creating weekly closet drops on the site.
The move comes as the company says more than half of its users are now members of Gen Z, with 66% of these turning to it for shopping. It also says clicks to advertisers from its platform have nearly quadrupled in the past two years.
Secondhand and vintage items are particularly popular at the moment, with searches for “dream thrift finds” increasing 550% amongst Gen Z users, and searchers for “vintage autumn aesthetic” increased by 1,074%.
Male users are also interested in pre-loved items, with searches for “secondhand outfits for men” increasing by 31%. For autumn 2025, Pinterest predicts a focus on vintage watches, with searches for “best luxury watches for men” increasing by 55%, and “vintage luxury watch” increasing by 82%.
Pre-loved furniture and decor are also trending, with searches for “secondhand kitchens” and “secondhand decor” increasing by 1,012% and 283% respectively.
Pinterest has also shared its 2025 Autumn Trend Report, noting a renewed focus on secondhand and unique items.
“This new wave of style is less about following the crowd and more about finding one of a kind pieces that tell personal stories – while keeping planet and budget in mind,” the company says.
The news follows shortly after Debenhams Group, the online retailer behind brands including Debenhams, PrettyLittleThing, boohoo, boohooMAN and Karen Millen, announced it would be using Pinterest to increase brand awareness through its suite of AI tools.
2025 RTIH INNOVATION AWARDS
Social commerce will be a key focus area at the 2025 RTIH Innovation Awards.
The awards. which are now open for entries, celebrate global tech innovation in a fast moving omnichannel world.
Our 2024 hall of fame entrants were revealed during an event which took place at RIBA’s 66 Portland Place HQ in Central London on 21st November, and consisted of a drinks reception, three course meal, and awards ceremony presided over by comedian Lucy Porter.
In his welcome speech, Scott Thompson, Founder and Editor, RTIH, said: “The event is now into its sixth year and what a journey it has been. The awards started life as an online only affair during the Covid outbreak, before launching as a small scale in real life event and growing year on year to the point where we’re now selling out this fine, historic venue.”
He added: “Congratulations to all of our finalists. Many submissions did not make it through to the final stage, and getting to this point is no mean feat. Checkout-free stores, automated supply chains, immersive experiences, on-demand delivery, next generation loyalty offerings, inclusive retail, green technology. We’ve got all the cool stuff covered this evening.”
“But just importantly we’ve got lots of great examples of companies taking innovative tech and making it usable in everyday operations - resulting in more efficiency and profitability in all areas.”
Congratulations to our 2024 winners, and a big thank you to our sponsors, judging panel, the legend that is Lucy Porter, and all those who attended November's gathering.
